Components of a Healthy Home

When you think of a healthy home, what comes to mind? For us, it’s simple: when you are healthy, you are more comfortable. That means clean food to eat, clean water to drink and clean air to breathe.

There is a reason that Birmingham turns to Comfort A/C for home indoor air quality solutions. IAQ is our core service: our bread and butter, so to speak. We specialize in creating healthy homes because we have seen the dramatic change in the quality of lives of Alabama families.  There are three components to a healthy home:

Fresh Air

Stepping outside and getting a breath of fresh air can be refreshing. Why? The air inside your home is simply recirculated over and over and over again. Filters can only do so much to improve the quality of the same, recirculated air. Forcing fresh air from the outdoors can make a dramatic change in your home’s air quality. Specifically, the fresh air can dilute the recirculated air, rendering any contaminants inside your home less effective. Ventilation has proven to be so effective that building codes require commercial buildings like schools and offices to have fresh air pumped inside.

Filtration

When you think about ways to improve indoor air quality, what comes to your mind will probably be filters. Air filters capture the large particles floating in your air, like dust and ragweed pollen. The most common home air filters have efficiency classifications called MERV ratings. The higher the MERV rating, the more a filter can capture. Then there are HEPA filters, which are even more stringent. Beyond the typical air filter media, there are other ways to clean the air in your home. Some examples include Ultraviolet (UV) lights and air purifiers.

Humidity Control

The moisture levels in your home are an essential component of indoor air quality. Certainly, humidity levels that are too high or too low can be uncomfortable. But from the perspective of creating a healthy home, moisture is critical. Too much moisture promotes the growth of bacteria and mold. On the other hand, not enough moisture can be just as bad. Microbes for viruses like the cold and flu sit dormant in dry air, seeking rehydration to activate. It turns that humans are an excellent source of water (after all, we are made of 60% H2O). So, having dry air can increase the likelihood of sickness in your home. The sweet spot for humidity is 40-60%.

Why Choose Comfort A/C?

It’s Simple: We Will Solve Your Home Air Quality Problems

As indoor air quality specialists, we don’t just slap on a solution and hope for the best. We know that creating healthy indoor air is not as easy as flipping a switch. When you work with Comfort A/C, you can expect expert-level care and consideration every step of the way.

One of our first steps will likely be indoor air quality testing. We find that basic air testing is essential to narrow down the best solution. This is particularly true of you are experiencing any of these problems:

  • Mystery allergen or asthma triggers
  • Stinky smells or odors from an unknown source
  • Itchy eyes and throat despite being otherwise healthy

Air quality testing is quick, easy, and best of all: you will get a detailed report of exactly what is in the air you are breathing. Measuring the pollutants and levels of contaminants in your air is the most accurate way to solve air quality problems.

A simple air quality test can lead to a simple solution. We helped the Tegaue’s put an end to severe allergy symptoms. Our air quality test revealed a high concentration of dust in the child’s bedroom. The source? A net of stuffed animals above their bed. Allow us to help you quickly get to the bottom of  your home health problems.
